Carpet Moths
Moth damage is often found after moving furniture around in a room as the moths do not like light or being disturbed, so you are unlikely to find then in the middle of a room or in walk ways. The moth eggs are laid on or in the carpet and the lava hatches in around 5 days. Larvae of the case-making moths live in silken cases which they drag with them. The lava will eat the wool fibers of the carpet as the fibers are a protein. As the lava grows so does the case, until finally the case is converted into a tough cocoon in which the pupa develops. The moth emerges in one to four weeks. It will eat the wool fibres. In the photograph you can see a lava and the beginnings of a cocoon in the back ground. Any Moths fluttering around the house are probably males, because females travel by running, hopping. The female lays between 100 and 150 white eggs on the surface of the carpet.
For removal of the carpet moth we first need to clean the carpets in question. This is to remove soil from the carpet fibers so that when we apply an insecticide it will dry in the fibers and not on them. The lava will continue eating the impregnated fibers and die off. This method is designed to break the life cycle, thus clearing the infestation.
The third photograph shows the back of a moth damaged rug, you can clearly see the woolen knots missing and the cotton foundation of the rug visible.
